The story primarily follows a diverse group of characters. Detective Joe Miller, a Belter (a person from the asteroid belt), is on a mission to find a missing woman, Julie Mao. His search leads him to James Holden, the first officer of the ice - hauler Canterbury. When the Canterbury is attacked, Holden and his crew find themselves in the middle of a vast conspiracy that could change the fate of the solar system.
